SOAPS 411 REPORT: 06/26/09
What a week last week was, eh? No, I am not Canadian, but I tend to say “eh” a lot, especially now. After finally being able to watch the soaps last week, I can now officially feel the need to comment on some aspects...on screen and off.
On June 18, Stardish Radio welcomed Beth Ehlers to the show,
and the internet is buzzing about what she had to say about not only Chuck
Pratt, but also her co-star J.R. Martinez. Courtesy of We Love Soaps:
“As many times as I would casually try to go into my boss’s office and say, ‘Uh, you are going to start integrating me, right?’ When you’ve been doing this as long as I’ve been doing it, you know how it’s supposed to be done. But you can’t tell your bosses that because it’s like any other job in the world, you can’t know more than your boss because they hate you for it. And so you have to be careful when you go in that you don’t tell somebody how to do his or her job. And I wanted to scream at people. I wanted to go in and say, ‘Hello, you're burying me here. You’re making this really hard. First you give me somebody who, God bless him, I love J.R. but he's not an actor.’ And so that’s hard enough with somebody who ... it’s going to be a long time before he gets out of second gear. And I’m constantly having to hedge my performance because I can’t be doing Shakespeare while he’s doing something else.”
I listened to the show, and I didn’t think how she meant it was supposed to be an insult, but I really will not comment on that front. I will say that Ehlers is right about Mr. Pratt. I think he is smoking the GOOD 420 simply because it is making my head spin. I even gave him praise when he first started. Now, I am in utter disgust. Yes, I mean the getting together with younger people scenarios. Anyway, aside from that, listen for Martinez to state his side on Stardish Radio June 29, 2009 at 10 PM EST.
I happened to watch As The World
Turns last week, as well as today, and I must say…this show happens to be…CRAP
ON A STICK! I can write the show better than what we got now. First off, I was
in utter disbelief that Riley Morgan turned out to indeed be Adam Munson and
working with Col. Mayer? Not just that, Adam not only changed his face, but
also changed his ways? I am with Casey Hughes on this one. Why are we supposed
to suddenly forgive Adam for everything he did to Will and Gwen those few years
ago? Sorry, I don’t buy Adam regretting his mistakes just yet. Why? He is not
acting like it. If anything, he seems to still be a jerk with a new face. And
why is it that the storylines are wrapping up too quickly? This is NOT B&B!
Maybe it is…after all, Emily has a son in Hunter. You have Henry dressing up as
Geneva Swift…I could go on about this crap forever. The bottom line is…we need
a new head writer, and executive producer ASAP!
I will admit that I am awaiting Lynn Herring to make her first appearance on the show in July. Also, it looks like Judi Evans will stop digging up funeral plots and head over to Oakdale in August. Sorry, DAYS fans. We are not going to have our Justin/Adrienne reunion….yet. Other than that, what is keeping me from tuning out this once great show? Damned if I know.
I have still not have watched DAYS yet. Some are saying it is good, some are saying it is bad, and the upcoming spoilers are awful. Oh that note….yea I know I am biased. So, if anyone gives me a reason to check out DAYS, please tell me!
Am I the only one who wants Brooke
Logan AWAY from Ridge? No? I didn’t think so. I would love to have Bill and
Brooke hook up and get it on...yes, now I am using the CBS promo pun. I was
even a Brooke/Thorne fan back in the day. Those two were actually romantically
interesting. Ridge and Brooke….ZZZZZzzzzzzzzz. Taylor and Ridge deserve one
another. I am also enjoying the cougar story between Jackie Marone and Owen
Knight. They are oozing with chemistry
right now, and Brandon Beemer is doing a great job on B&B. I like him
better on this show than DAYS. I liked him on DAYS, so go figure.
General Hospital…..only good thing I can say about this show…Martha Byrne.
I am still puzzled by something…why
did Gina Tognoni not extend her contract on Guiding Light? As of June 26, Tognoni
taped her final scenes, and decided not to extend her contract to the end of
its run. No specifics have been addressed, but I feel indifferent. She could
have stayed just one more month, but IF she did land another job and had to be
there for it, then I would understand her bolting. We will just have to wait to
see. The Hollywood Reporter is also reporting that PGP wanted GL to fail and
did everything they could to kill it.
I feel that is justifiable simply because
we never heard anything about GL making it to another network, if not staying
on CBS. If that is the case, then what does that say about ATWT, a show that is
next on the chopping block? PGP wanted out of the business for years, and NEVER
wanted to sell the shows to CBS. Could this be their way of finally getting out
of soaps and focus on nothing BUT soap? I am all for supporting my favorite
shows, but PGP is not giving me any cause FOR me to support them. Why should I,
if this is true? What they are doing to the shows, the actors, and most notably
the fans, will only make things worse in the grand scheme of things.
Also, in Springfield, it seems Otalia is going to welcome a child into their humble abode. Seems Natalia has a nice bun in the oven. *rolls eyes* Also, the return of the Bauer BBQ is underway, which absolutely amazes me that GL even remembers those two words at all. And it looks like Phillip Spaulding may be the one who bites the dust in the end. I really wish that those at GL should have produced and written a better quality show than what we have now. If it continues this way towards the end, I won’t feel like there will anything to remember on its last day!
What is up with people leaving
shows because of homosexuality? That seems to be the death sentence for actors
these days. Daytime Confidential issued a confirmed report that Saundra
Santiago has been taped into taking over the role of Carlotta Vega on One Life
to Live from Patricia Mauceri. Several reports are claiming that Carlotta was
to have a small part in the Fish and Kyle gay storyline, and that Mauceri was
against it, conflicting with her personal Catholic beliefs. Other reports are
claiming that Mauceri did not believe Carlotta would be for homosexuality
.
Either way, why is it that actors are for everything else, such as adultery,
womanizing, murder…but when it comes to homosexuality, they are against it? It
baffles my mind, to say the least. It’s a JOB…an ACTING JOB nonetheless. Just
suck it up and do the work. What is so hard about that? That sound you hear is
Chris Engen telling me to grow a pair. Well, you know what…not being that big
of a name like Eric Braeden or Robin Strasser and telling them you are not
going to play the storyline, you think the writers will cater to that? Actors
can be replaced. Low and behold…they have.
Now, onto the soap that I cannot
miss day in and out…The Young and the Restless. Wednesday marked the final day
of Engen as Adam Wilson, and
Michael Muhney made his debut in the role the
following day. I am enjoying Muhney’s performance on the show to date. How he
is presenting Adam, in my opinion, is that he has this innocence about him. You
want to believe he is not capable of gaslighting Ashley, but in reality, he
does. That is what I think may happen. We have not seem him be fully evil yet.
So, his attitude may change on screen. Also, it was smart to not have the
Rafe/Adam sex scene be seen. It is not your typical gay romance. Adam just
blows a guy to shut him up. If this romp was seen by viewers, it would offend a
lot of viewers, so we were led to believe that they did the deed. Ingenious.
Honestly, I have a strong feeling Muhney will make this role his own. Hopefully,
down the line, others will see it, too. (Not to twist anyone’s arm)
Amazing how Y&R seems to be
the IT show right now with exciting developments happening on screen AND off.
As we previously heard, Melody Thomas Scott reached an impasse on contract
negotiations, refusing to not go on recurring nor take a pay cut. We then
learned that Scott re-signed with the show on her terms, and not exactly sure
of what those terms are, courtesy of TV Guide. Now, we have heard yet another
story that she hasn’t inked a deal to stay on the show. Why must I be tortured so? Is she or isn’t
she staying? A spoiler was posted about Nikki at Daytime Royalty, courtesy of
Kenny. To read the spoiler, visit http://daytimeroyaltyonline.com/single/?p=8180130&t=8139757
I really do hope that Melody is staying with the show. As Eileen Davidson said in a recent interview with Nelson Branco, you cannot have Y&R without Nikki Newman. Only time will tell….
I am thoroughly enjoying the Nina/Phillip/Cane storyline! How great is it to see Tricia Cast acting opposite of Jess Walton and Jeanne Cooper again? It has been a long time coming. Nina’s reaction to not seeing a body in the casket was absolutely riveting! Y&R, if you are listening, give Tricia a contract, please? She definitely brought back something to the show that was missing for so many years!
Now, as far as Mary Jane…I mean
Patty…goes, I love that crazy vixen! Not even her talking to a stuffed cat
scares me away. I think she is out of her gourd, but that’s life in the soap
world. Why Jack doesn’t know she is Patty Williams is beyond me. Actually, I
shouldn’t be surprised. He is too busy worrying about Sharon and her bun in the
oven.
So, a baby, that is actually Nick’s, is inside Sharon’s belly, and she
goes around town telling the whole world it is Jack’s child. This will blow up
in her face. She knows how desperately Jack wanted to be a father…not just to
Sharon’s child, but remember Summer? You know, Phyllis’ child who is in a coma
in the hospital? Remember how devastated he was when he learned she was not his
child? Imagine what will happen that he will be stolen a child again to Nick…his
former stepson. Joshua Morrow, Michelle
Stafford, Peter Bergman, and Sharon Case are going to rock the storyline as
best as they know how.
I know a lot of fans are upset that Nick and Phyllis will be together a bit longer, but the fact is this not how Y&R always was? It took YEARS before people had their happy ending. It took a long time before Nina knew about David Kimble. It took a kidnapping for Lauren to finally know the truth about Scotty Grainger…2 years after Sheila came to town. Hell, there are even stories that are dropped and never even heard of again. Ashley Abbott being adopted and not really John’s daughter, for one. That was a story they could have played out with Jerry Douglas before that viper Lynn Marie Latham came in and killed off this wonderful patriarch. The list goes on and on. For me, personally, it seems to be the Y&R of old, combined with some new developments in the process.
For now, I must bid you all farewell. Live long and prosper...
